Cotehele unlocked

July 18, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Explore areas usually off-limits including closets, offices and an opportunity to climb on the roof.

The 16th-century dovecote in the Valley Garden was once the roost for birds that were destined for the Edgcumbe family’s dinner table. These days a dole of doves happily makes its home there without worry. During Cotehele unlocked you’ll be able to go inside the dovecote, climb the spiralling 55 stone stairs to the roof of the house (weather permitting) and see areas not usually on the visitor route. ‘Cotehele unlocked will give you a chance to meander and mooch around behind the scenes,’ says Rachel Hunt, Cotehele’s House and Collections Manager. ‘It’s rewarding for the staff and volunteers too because it gives us an opportunity to chat about what we do.’ You might want to bring a torch to peek into the back of all the closets. The gardeners advise anyone hoping to visit the dovecote not to wear their best shoes – the resident white doves do tend to leave the ground floor a bit mucky.

Normal admission fees apply- £11 for adults and £5.50 for children
